In-store audit reveals employee theft

A Marshalltown Staples employee is charged with using legitimate purchase receipts to fraudulently obtain over $1,100.

Police arrested Cindy Potter, 42, Thursday afternoon and charged her with second-degree theft - a Class D felony.

Potter was a store manager at the Staples, 27 Berle Road, and had been using receipts to process transactions and pocket the money for a couple months before a district in-store audit revealed the charade, said Capt. Mike Hanken of the Marshalltown Police Department.

Police released Potter on a citation and she will make her initial appearance March 12.

Del and Abbi (Buchan) Lowry are the parents of a son, Elias Maurice Lowry, born on Feb. 27 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines weighing 8 pounds 4 ounces. He joins a brother, Destry Frank. Local grandparents are Frank and Sue Buchan and great-grandma Dorothy Buchan.

Marliee Sanache-Perez, of Tama, made an initial appearance on a public intoxication charge. She pleaded guilty and was fined $65 with a $22.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.75 due immediately. The court allowed for monthly installment payments of $50 beginning April 6 until the debt is completed or in lieu of the fine and surcharge she may do 12 hours of community service plus pay the court costs to be completed by July 15.

Mabil Ruei, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a probation violation charge. The court appointed Jennifer Meyer to represent him in this matter. The Probation Revocation Hearing is set for 11:15 a.m. on March 30. Bond is set at $2,000 cash or surety.

Andrew Burke, 407 Woodbury St., made an initial appearance on a probation revocation charge. The Public Defender's Office was appointed to handle his case. The Probation Revocation Hearing is set for 9 a.m. on April 6. Bond is set at $5,000 cash or surety.

Robert Shattuck, 910 S. 2nd Ave., made an initial appearance on a probation violation charge. The Public Defender's Office was appointed to handle his case. The Probation Revocation Hearing will be scheduled by District Court as their docket permits. Shattuck was released on his own recognizance.

Alissa Christine Steffa, 1203 W. State St., made an initial appearance on a leaving the scene of an accident/damage to vehicles only charge. She pleaded guilty and was fined $65 with a $22.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.75 due immediately.

Matthew Feld, 524 N. 1st St. Apt. #2, made an initial appearance on a possession of a Schedule I Controlled substance (marijuana) charge and a possession of drug paraphernalia charge. The Preliminary Hearing is set for 1 p.m. on March 28. The court ordered that he obtain a substance abuse evaluation and submit the results to the court within 60 days. Feld was released on his own recognizance.

Lance Hazen, 404 Melody Lane Apt. #4, made an initial appearance on a promoting/sponsoring a gathering where controlled substances are used charge. The Public Defender's Office was appointed to handle his case. The Preliminary Hearing is set for 1 p.m. on March 28. Hazen was released on his own recognizance. The court ordered that he obtain a substance abuse evaluation and submit the results to the court within 60 days.

On Thursday, an employee with Staples Office Superstore, 27 W. Berle Rd., reported the theft of cash in the amount of $1,141.25.

On Thursday, Dana Hessenius, 1721 Country Club Lane, reported the theft of a IPod Touch. Estimated value of loss was $200.

On Thursday, Claudia Calderon, 906 W. Church St., reported the theft of a Coach purse and contents and a book from her residence. Estimated value of loss was $442.

On Thursday, Tom Campbell, 910 S. 14th Ave., reported damage to a fiberglass molding/side panel on a 90 Pace Arrow motor home while parked at his residence and the theft of a Ionau electric generator. Estimated value of loss was $660.

On Thursday, Angie Beaty, 403 S. 3rd St., reported hit and run damage to the driver side mirror, fender and paint on a 2009 Ford Focus while parked at her residence. Estimated value of damage was $600.

On Wednesday, a person associated with Mid-Iowa Mini-Storage, 112 E. Church St., reported damage to 13 door storage locks and hasps at 718 N. 4th Ave. Estimated value of damage was $1,000.

Citations

On Thursday, Jay Richard Baca, of Baxter, was cited for theft, fifth degree from Gervich Metal Processing.

On Feb. 29, Cindy Lou Potter, 3202 S. 12th St. Lot #155, was cited for theft, second degree from Staples.

Incidents

On Monday, Kole Allen Mulinix, of Liscomb, reported window damage to the windshield, rear window and side windows on a 2001 Dodge Stratus while parked at 2200 Summit St., and the theft of a Panasonic in-dash car stereo. Estimated value of loss was $1,000.

On Feb. 25, Heidi Renae Smith, 2712 Rockton Dr., reported the theft of Yamaha Blaster recreational vehicle from her residence. Estimated value of loss was $1,000.

On Feb. 23, Timothy Allen Rahn, of Ferguson, reported the theft of a 1996 Saturn SL from his residence. Estimated value of loss was $2,500.

Arrests

On Tuesday, Michael Lee Querry, of Grinnell, was arrested for driving under suspension, driving while barred, improper brake lamp, driving while revoked and possession of drug paraphernalia.

On Tuesday, Dakota Wesley Farris, of State Center, was arrested for violation of probation.

On Sunday, Bryan Quinn Leger, 2907 Cooper Lane, was arrested for operating while intoxicated and violation of park hours.

On March 2, Arop Dut Malwal-Arop, of Des Moines, was arrested for criminal mischief, third degree, trespass and mental health hold.
