Woman faces 25 forgery-related charges

Polk County Sheriff's Office arrested a Clive woman with a litany of charges in Marshalltown Monday.

Kimberly Champagne-Hernandez, 44, spent some time in Marshalltown in October and November 2011 staying with friends, said Capt. Chris Jones of the Marshalltown Police Department.

While staying with two separate friends, on the south and northeast ends of town, Champagne-Hernandez allegedly stole two check books. She then fled to Des Moines where she used the stolen checks to fraudulently purchase a more than $1,600 worth of goods, mostly clothing, over the course of a few weeks, Jones said.

Champagne-Hernandez faces 11 counts of forgery, two counts of identity theft, Class D felonies; four counts of fourth-degree theft, serious misdemeanors and eight counts of fifth-degree theft, simple misdemeanors.

The court set Champagne-Hernandez's bond at $5,000 which she posted the same day of her arrest, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office. Her preliminary hearing is set for April 2.
