Tama resident Christina Blackcloud-Garcia has announced her intentions to run as a Democrat for the Iowa House in District 72. The area includes Tama County and a part of Marshall County and Blackhawk County and was previously served by Rep. Lance Horbach, R-Tama, who is not running again.
Blackcloud-Garcia is the executive director of tribal operations at the Sac & Fox Tribe of the Mississippi (Meskwaki Nation).
She said she will work to try to get both sides of the aisle to work together to help Iowans.

"I care for this district and I want to represent them and I'm ready," she said.
She has previous political experience working as an intern for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and for U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa.
"That really opened my eyes to all the issues out there," Blackcloud-Garcia said.
Her two main areas of focus for improvement for the area are education and economic development. She also wants to work toward a balanced state budget.
Blackcloud-Garcia will run in the June 5 primary against Democrat Nathan Wrage of Gladbrook. Garwin resident Dean Fisher is running as a Republican for the seat.
Fisher has already been campaigning for months, so if Blackcloud-Garcia gets the Democratic nod she realizes she has some catching up to do.
"I plan to have listening posts and be out in the community that I want to represent," she said.
