SPORTS SHORTS: Tiger netters trip Dike-New Hartford

ELDORA - The South Hardin girls' tennis team opened the season with a dominant 7-2 victory over Dike-New Hartford on Tuesday.

The Tigers won a pair of matches via tiebreakers to keep D-NH at bay. South Hardin also swept the doubles bouts.

Ellen Swartz was a 10-3 winner at No. 1 singles and she paired with Alesha Kadolph for a 10-5 win at No. 1 doubles.

Makayla Fisher scored an 11-10 (5) triumph at No. 4 singles, while Brooke Rush and Katie Branch also won their singles matches.

Fisher and Branch earned the win in the closest match of the night, going 11-10 (9) to prevail at No. 3 doubles.

South Hardin opens with a draw

DIKE - South Hardin and Dike-New Hartford played to a 3-3 draw in NICL boys' tennis action on Tuesday.

The teams split the four singles matches and did the same with the two doubles. The positions not filled by either team were called draws.

South Hardin won at No. 1 singles behind Blake Baker's 10-2 match and at No. 3 as freshman Micah Dorow took the tiebreaker for an 11-10 win.

Baker teamed with Dalton Miller to claim the No. 1 doubles, 10-3.

Redhawks score second at Dunkerton

DENVER - The North Tama girls' track and field team took second at the Dunkerton Relays on Tuesday.

The Redhawks accumulated 117 points, trailing just Aplington-Parkersburg's 126.

Kailey Kladivo won the high jump for North Tama, clearing 5 feet, 4 inches while Josie Youel was the long jump champion with a leap of 15-5.

UNI softball streaks to 12th straight

MACOMB, Ill. - The University of Northern Iowa softball team ran its winning streak to 12 games with an 8-0 victory over Western Illinois on Tuesday.

Gina Brown and Courtney Dunker both drove in three runs for the Panthers, which improve to 25-9 overall. Jaye Hutcheson was the winning pitcher, shutting out the Leathernecks on five hits.

UNI's current streak is the program's longest since 1980 and broke the Panthers' previous best run in Division I.

Missouri Valley Conference-leading Northern Iowa hosts second-place Drake on Friday and Saturday in Cedar Falls.
