Now all my friends know my freezer is full of good Iowa beef, and that I am a card carrying member of the group "People Eating Tasty Animals." Having said that, safe or not, I find the idea of beef trimmings treated with a puff of ammonia downright unappetizing. In mid-March the USDA allowed local schools to make their own decisions regarding use of the filler. Several prominent food chains and restaurants jumped on the bandwagon as well. Less government, fewer regulations and local control sound like Republican tenants. Companies react to trends to increase market share. Sounds like capitalism and the free market to me. Unfortunately, Gov. Branstad sees a conspiracy, and smear campaign, and has taken to the stump demanding a congressional investigation. According to the Des Moines Register, this same industry contributed $152,000 to our Governor's' recent election campaign. Maybe the governor's motivation needs a cleansing "puff of ammonia." I can think of a lot of issues that demand the governor's attention, but this isn't one of them. Let the free market system function.
