Jill Weitzell, 409 N. 7th Ave., made an initial appearance on a driving while barred charge. The Public Defender's Office was appointed to handle her case. The Preliminary Hearing is set for 1 p.m. on April 25. Weitzell was released on her own recognizance.

Bryce Manning, of Ankeny, made an initial appearance on a possession of alcohol under legal age charge. He pleaded not guilty and a Pre-Trial Conference is set for 9 a.m. on May 8. Manning was released on his own recognizance.

Merlin Choneska, of Tama, made an initial appearance on a public intoxication charge. He pleaded guilty and was fined $65 with a $22.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.75 due immediately. The court allowed for monthly installment payments of $50 beginning May 3 until the debt is completed.

Kyle Simpson, of Des Moines, made an initial appearance on a possession of alcohol under legal age charge and a serving alcohol to minor at parties charge. He pleaded not guilty and a Pre-Trial Conference is set for 9 a.m. on May 8. Simpson was released on his own recognizance.

Jessica Hartwig, 306 Melody Lane Apt. #2, made an initial appearance on two counts of a theft, fifth degree charge. The court appointed Jeffrey Hazen to represent her in these cases. She pleaded not guilty and a Pre-Trial Conference is set for 9 a.m. on May 8. Hartwig was released on her own recognizance.

Joseph Kinney, 606 Lincolnway, made an initial appearance on a assault causing bodily injury charge. The Preliminary Hearing is set for 1 p.m. on April 25.

A no-contact order was issued for the protected party. Kinney was released on his own recognizance.

Incidents

On Thursday, Emanuel Eldon Mattingly, 503 W. Boone St., reported the theft of a Quantum and Shakespeare fishing rods and reels from his residence. Estimated value of loss was $600.

On Thursday, Mary Alexander, 309 N. 3rd Ave., reported the theft of a tire and rim from a 2003 Ford Taurus while parked at her residence. Estimated value of loss was $150.

On Monday, David Wallace Engel, 11 Denmead Boulevard, reported the theft of a 32 foot extension ladder and a 16 foot extension ladder from the side of his garage. Estimated value of loss was $450.

Arrests

On Thursday, Merlin F. Choneska, of Tama, was arrested for public intoxication.
