BROOKLYN - The GMG girls' track and field squad captured the Class B team championship at BGM's Bear Classic Relays on Friday.
The Wolverines won three events to go with seven runner-up showings to amass 128 points. Sigourney was second with 120, while Montezuma and English Valleys tied for third with 90 in the seven-team event.
Sophomore Caitlin Appelgate accounted for one of those second-place finishes as she had a mark of 5 feet, 4 inches in the high jump to break the GMG school record.
Sigourney's Jerica Gretter also cleared 5-4 to win the high jump and both her and Appelgate and now tied for fifth this spring, going into the night, among Class 1A competitiors in the event.
GMG's Emily Havelka continued to shine in the hurdle events. The senior won the 100-meter hurdles in 17.46 seconds and the 400 hurdles in 1:11.04.
GMG's 4x100 relay turned in a season-best of 55.87 to place first with the group of Mikaella Koster, Appelgate, Melody Beane and Sara Hinson.
Placing second were Hinson in the 200 (28.48), Ella Gruen in the 400 (1:09.29), Elle Edwards in the 3,000 (13:31.59), Koster in the 400 hurdles (1:16.14), the 4x800 (11:36.79) and shuttle hurdle (1:16.44).
GMG is at the Dike-New Hartford Invitational on Tuesday.
