COLLEGE ROUND-UP: Panthers take pair from Bears

CEDAR FALLS - Northern Iowa erupted in the ninth inning take take an opening game duel between two of the top softball pitchers in the Missouri Valley Conference on Saturday. The Panthers followed with another late rally in the second game of the doubleheader.

All-MVC first team pitchers Natalie Rose of Missouri Valley and Jamie Fisher of UNI went at it in the first game at Robinson Dresser to the tune of eight scoreless innings apiece. The Bears scored one in the top of the ninth, but UNI answered in the bottom half of the inning with a walk-off grand slam by Gina Brown. The Conrad native Fisher allowed one run on two hits, walking four and striking out 10 to move her season record to 17-1.

The Panthers (33-11, 17-1) scored three in the sixth to rally past Missouri State (19-21, 7-11) in game two. The Panthers' Melissa Walls threw out the potential tying run at the plate in the seventh. The two teams play today at noon in Cedar Falls.

Thrilling softball win for Cyclones over Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Iowa State achieved its largest comeback victory in Big 12 Conference softball play in a 10-9 victory over Kansas on Saturday.

The Cyclones fell behind 6-0 off the bat and were in an 8-3 hole in the fourth inning before surging back. Junior Tori Torrescano had a home run for Iowa State, her 12th of the season to set the ISU single-season record.

Kansas (27-16, 4-13) took the first game of the series from Iowa State (14-29, 2-12) on Friday, 8-2. Junior Erica Miller matched the Cyclone career home run mark with her 27th blast at ISU.

Creighton defeats Northern Iowa tennis

OMAHA, Neb. - Host Creighton handed Northern Iowa a 5-2 setback in Missouri Valley Conference women's tennis on Saturday. Marshalltown native Krissy Lankelma was a 6-1, 6-1 winner for the Panthers at No. 5 singles.
