PREP GOLF: Plaehn cards low round at Comet Invite

CONRAD - Host BCLUW had two of the top five individual scores to finish in second at its own Comet Invite boys' golf meet on a beautiful Monday evening at Oakwood Golf Course.

Cole Thompson and Chad Frazer both shot 41 to lead the Comets, who finished with a 174 team total.

Hudson had four rounds of 43 or better to win with a 167, while AGWSR (177) held on for third place in the 10-team tournament.

GMG's Chad Plaehn had back-to-back birdies in his medalist round of 2-over 37, but the Wolverines came in ninth as a team. AGWSR's Owen Abkes earned the runner-up spot with his 40, beating out NU High's Austin Goreham in a two-hole sudden-death playoff.

Fifth-place finisher East Marshall (180) was led by Zach Underhill's round of 42. North Tama took sixth with a 181 behind Taylor Dinsdale's 42, while West Marshall shot 182 with Josh Wren (42) leading the Trojans.

South Hardin (184) took eighth with Eric Mulder and Ryan Mossman both shooting 45. GMG carded a 189 for ninth, with Chris Read's 49 following up Plaehn's medalist round.

Schacterle, Cougar girls reign at Comet Invite

UNION - Katie Schacterle birdied two of the three par-3s at South Hardin Recreation Area to gain medalist honors and lead the AGWSR girls' golf team to the top spot at the Comet Invite on Monday evening.

Schacterle shot a 2-over-par 37 to lead the pack and help AGWSR hold off a balanced West Marshall effort for first place. The Cougars had two of the top three individual scores and a 192 team total, while West Marshall's four counting scores all medaled (top-12) for its 193.

East Marshall's Chantel Eicher had a birdie during her 4-over round of 39 in taking runner-up honors. The Mustangs came in sixth with a 211 - one stroke out of a three-way tie for the third-best team score (210) shared by Hudson, Union and South Hardin.

AGWSR's Megan Heinz was the third-place golfer with a 46.

West Marshall used rounds of 48 from Courtney Porter, Claire Underwood and Shayla Moler, and Emily Durlin's 49.

South Hardin was paced by Cami Eller's round of 51, which won a cardback for the 12th and final medal. Host BCLUW was seventh with a 215, led by Morgan Trinkle's eight-place round of 49.

North Tama came in eighth (224) behind Nichole Jones' 53, while last-placed GMG (233) was led by Shannon Fleming's 51.

Denver upends G-R boys

DENVER - The Denver boys' golf team counted four scores between 40 and 41 to hand Gladbrook-Reinbeck just its second dual meet loss of the season, 161-168, on Monday at Willow Run Country Club.

G-R's Kevin Trobaugh earned medalist honors with a 2-over round of 37. Jacob Smoldt carded a 41 while Brady Billerbeck and Parker Bolt both shot 45.

Denver had a three-way tie for runner-up medalist between Blain Buhr, Austin Buhrow and Chase Shedenhelm, who each shot 40. Kurtis Smith rounded it out with a 41 for the Cyclones.
