A native of Thailand, Hel Ter did not make any excuses about her previous lack of English language comprehension as a fifth grade student at Lenihan Intermediate School.

The 10-year-old would prefer to put in the hard work to get better.

"She works really hard," said her teacher Crystal Gassman. "It's not good enough for her to be OK. She wants it right every time."

Lenihan Intermediate School fifth grader Hel Ter talks to her teacher Crystal Gassman at the school last week. She is from Thailand and has quickly improved her English language skills.

Gassman said Hel Ter has overcome many obstacles and has come very far quickly in her work. She also inspires other students to work hard.

"It makes her a very good role model," she said.

Hel Ter said she wants to become a nurse someday as she loves to help people.
