Local man arrested on April assault charges

Police arrested a man wanted for assault, theft and child endangerment Wednesday.

Robert Ratliff, 26, of Marshalltown, allegedly violated a no-contact order by assaulting his live-in girlfriend in front of the couple's then 3-month-old child before making off with her cell phone at her home on the 1400 block of South Seventh Avenue April 1, said Capt. Mike Hanken of the Marshalltown Police Department.

Ratliff faces two counts of violation of a no-contact order, fifth-degree theft - all simple misdemeanors - child endangerment without injury and aggravated assault, both aggravated misdemeanors.

During the alleged assault, Ratliff's 20-year-old girlfriend suffered bruising to right her eye and left forearm and a bite to her shoulder but was not hospitalized, Hanken said.

Police arrested Ratliff at the South Seventh Street home where the assault took place in April, earning him the second violation of a no-contact order.

Woman allegedly steals $2,500 in jewelry from her mother

A Marshalltown woman will likely have to pay restitution to a local business after she allegedly sold $2,500 in stolen jewelry to the store.

Breianna Alday, 20, of Marshalltown, allegedly stole several rings from her mother at their home on the 1900 block of South Fourth Avenue Tuesday night, said Capt. Mike Hanken of the Marshalltown Police Department.

Police recovered the jewelry from Valuables 4 Cash, 132 W. Main St., and returned it to Alday's mother, he said.

Alday faces second-degree theft, a Class D felony. Second-degree theft ranges from $1,000 to $5,000, Hanken said, but the charge has to do with the value of the jewelry, not what the store paid for it. Reports released Thursday did not list how much the store paid for the jewelry.
