A Marshalltown woman who suffered serious injuries from a June 10 car crash in Des Moines died Wednesday night.
Anita Gummert, 50, died at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines after being involved in a two-car collision where fire officials had to use extrication tools to remove her from the car, said Lt. Trace Kendig of the Windsor Heights Police Department.
Kendig said what police initially thought was a three-car crash ended up only being a two-car crash.
Initially, Kendig said, police believed a third car - a PT Cruiser - was involved, but the investigation revealed that the driver was simply a passerby.
Police are still not releasing details of how the crash between a Nissan Maxima and a Ford Ranger on the 6400 block of I-235 occurred. Gummert was a passenger in the Ranger and the drivers of the Maxima and Ranger were unharmed, Kendig said.
The crash totaled both cars, and police charged the driver of the Maxima, Lucas Isleman, 28, of Des Moines, with an OWI.
The crash remains under investigation.
