Small but furious winds touched down in Marshalltown and State Center Wednesday night, leaving some businesses with structural damage.

Kim Elder, Marshall County Emergency Management director, said a small localized storm touched down near Casey's General Store, 911 Third Ave. Southwest in State Center, tearing off some of the store's canopy.

Debris swept through the store, causing minimal damage, she said. Elder said the store's owner told her the wind had also pushed a small shed about four feet.

The roof of State Center’s Car Wash flipped over on the other side of the building from Wednesday night’s storm.

The nearby carwash, 901 County Highway S52, also had some of its roof torn off.

Capt. Mike Hanken of the Marshalltown Police Department said both Clemons Chevrolet, 2909 S. Center St., and Jensen Ford, 2805 S. Center St., called police with reports of vandalism.

An investigation revealed that it was in fact strong winds that broke the car windows at the dealerships, Hanken said.
