Lady Jays steal Mustangs’ thunder in rated 3A battle

A spotlight game on the schedule lived up to its billing.

Bondurant-Farrar had the last word on Friday at the Bobcat Softball Classic as the Lady Jays claimed a 5-2 victory over East Marshall.

In the matchup of top programs that are in the top five of the Class 3A rankings, No. 3 Bondurant-Farrar jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead. The No. 5 Mustangs answered to tie the game and the Lady Jays followed with a three-run fifth inning that decided the well-played game.

Taylor Fricke finished 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for East Marshall. Chelsea Whitmore went 2-for-3 and Alyssa Whitmore 2-for-4. Pitcher Haley Long allowed five runs on 10 hits, walking five and striking out two.

Emily Wilson had a single, double and RBI for the Lady Jays. Bobbie Jo Burrows added a double. Cailey Schlenker was the winning pitcher (two runs on nine hits with two walks and four strikeouts). She also had an RBI single at the plate.

Ashley Burrows and Erin Sawatzky had back-to-back singles to start the bottom of the first as Bondurant-Farrar raced ahead to a 2-0 advantage.

East Marshall had hits in each of the first three innings and broke through in the fourth. The Mustangs had a pair of shots that hit off the fence off the fly in the frame and Fricke drove in a pair to tie the game.

Jays' ace Schlenker kept East Marshall from taking control by forcing the Mustangs to leave the bases loaded in the fifth. Bondurant-Farrar tallied three in the bottom half of the inning for the final margin.

East Marshall had a strong defensive effort, which included center fielder Abby Nuese making a highlight-reel catch and later also throwing a runner out at the plate.

East Marshall (21-3) faces Class 1A No. 5 Lisbon at 10:45 a.m. and Colfax-Mingo at 2:15 p.m. today at the Marshalltown Community College diamonds.

Bondurant-Farrar (22-6) has contests with South Hardin at 12:30 p.m. and Roland-Story at 2:15 p.m. today.
