TRAER - The GMG softball team won for the third time in its last four outings, rattling off a seven-run second inning on its way to an 8-2 triumph over North Tama in Friday's Iowa Star Conference clash.
Melody Beane had three of the Wolverines' 15 hits, including an RBI single in the team's second-inning eruption. Alix Hesmer and Mikaella Koster both added run-scoring singles and Peyton Mannan had a two-run knock to highlight the big at-bat for GMG (6-12, 6-5).
Emily Havelka had a single and a double, while Koster, Mannan, Hesmer and winning pitcher Abbie Duden had two hits apiece. Duden struck out five and scattered eight hits in the win.
GMG goes on the road Tuesday in league play, facing host Meskwaki at 5 p.m.
BASEBALL
North Tama 8, GMG 7
TRAER - North Tama and GMG tangled in a wild Iowa Star Conference baseball contest that the host Redhawks won 8-7 in eight innings on Friday.
GMG scored three runs in the seventh to force extra innings and then grabbed a 7-6 lead in the eighth. North Tama had an answer in the bottom half of the frame for the victory.
Kyle Barloon finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI for the Wolverines. Barloon doubled, stole third and scored in the eighth. Brandon Lolwing went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, while Tanner Krier had two hits, two runs and an RBI.
Starting pitcher Lolwing went five innings, allowing six runs. Chad Plaehn threw two scoreless innings in relief and Wade Barritt entered in the eighth and took the loss.
GMG (3-15, 3-8 Iowa Star) hosts a tournament today in Green Mountain.
West Marshall 8, Lynnville-Sully 7
SULLY - West Marshall held off the host Hawks for a victory late Thursday night.
Nolan Sinning had a pair of RBIs for the Trojans. Jared Riemenschneider added a triple, while Jared Johnson had a double. Braydn Beals finished with three runs scored and two stolen bases.
Matt Van Metre was the winning pitcher, going 4 2/3 innings on the hill. West Marshall led 8-3 after 3 1/2 innings before Lynnville-Sully made its charge.
