PREP SOFTBALL: Freland no-hits Spartans; AGWSR rips G-R

STATE CENTER - West Marshall freshman pitcher Rachel Freland struck out eight in a no-hitter and the Trojans took down Grundy Center, 10-3, in Monday's NICL West Division softball battle.

Freland walked four and surrendered three unearned runs - all in the third inning - to pick up the win.

McKenna Hotopp was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Elisabeth Phillips was 2-for-4 with a run to lead the Trojans offensively. Sadie Simatovich was 1-for-3 with three runs scored while Blair Bailey scored twice.

West Marshall (12-17, 5-7) goes to East Marshall tonight, while Grundy Center (4-18, 2-10) hosts AGWSR.

AGWSR 18, Gladbrook-Reinbeck 5, 5 innings

GLADBROOK - AGWSR freshman Ashley Sicard hit her team-leading third home run of the season and was the winning pitcher as the Cougars clubbed Gladbrook-Reinbeck 18-5 in five innings in Monday night's NICL West Division softball contest.

Sicard (17-7) allowed two earned runs on five hits, a walk and four strikeouts. She also went 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs.

AGWSR leadoff batter Kristen Zacharias was 3-for-5 with four RBIs, while Katelyn Schneck, Ella Frazier, Dani Fisher, Marissa Horner and Hannah Johnson had two hits apiece for the Cougars (20-7, 8-4).

Paige Thompson finished 2-for-3 with an RBI single and a two-run home run - her first of the season - to lead Gladbrook-Reinbeck (9-15, 5-7). Taylor Flamme and Carrie Shouse both went 1-for-2 with a run scored, and Emily Snider had the Rebels' other hit.

Taylor Street took the loss in the circle, allowing 13 runs (five earned) on 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings.

AGWSR goes to Grundy Center tonight in league play, while the Rebels travel to take on South Hardin in Eldora.

South Tama 16, South Hardin 2

ELDORA - Sam Holtz had three hits and six RBIs as South Tama defeated South Hardin, 16-2, in NICL West softball action Monday night.

Jade Rohach had four hits while Riley Craun, Madison Baack, Sarah Holtz, Trisha Walz and Tori Appelgate all had two hits apiece.

Jenn Maus drove in three runs and picked up the win from the circle, striking out three and walking one for STC (8-18, 4-8). The Trojans host BCLUW tonight.

The Tigers (3-17, 2-10) host Gladbrook-Reinbeck this evening.
