Boil advisory in place for Montour

July 3, 2012

MONTOUR - The town of Montour is under a boil advisory since Monday morning after there was unauthorized activity relating to the water system.

The activity dropped the water pressure below recommended levels in the water main.

"Just to be on the safe side, we issued a boil advisory to make sure everything's OK," said Rhonda Guy, water treatment operator with Montour. "We think the pressure went low but we're not sure how low. We're being more preventable than anything else."

The drop in water pressure occurred when a resident connected a hose to a fire hydrant to fill a swimming pool. When pressure is low, there is a chance bacteria can enter the water system.

Residents in the town are asked to boil water before using it to drink or with their food. It is safe to bathe and shower in without boiling.

Two sets of samples will have to be approved before the advisory is lifted, so it was expected to last 48 hours from when it started.

"Best case scenario, it will be (lifted by) Wednesday morning," Guy said.
