Police arrested a 16-year-old boy for third-degree sexual abuse Wednesday.
An investigation into Kolton Ealy, of Marshalltown, has been ongoing since at least June 17, according to police reports.
Ealy allegedly had sex with a 12-year-old girl, according to court documents.
Capt. Chris Jones, of the Marshalltown Police Department, said the charge is a result of the girl's age, which is sufficient to charge Ealy with the crime.
Jones declined to comment on how the two knew each other. He said the Marshall County Attorney's Office has instructed the MPD to guard any further details, saying disclosing them might bear negatively on a trial.
Police brought Ealy in for questioning and subsequently arrested him on the charge.
Third-degree sexual abuse is a Class C felony. Ealy's bond was set at $10,000. According to the Marshall County Jail, he made bond Thursday just before 4 p.m.
