August has finally arrived and that can only mean one thing: students are preparing to head back to school.

Starting Aug. 14 and running through Aug. 20, parents will be able to learn about the transitions from the different school buildings and students will be able to meet their new teachers and get a lay of the new land.

Jason Staker, communications director with the Marshalltown Community School District, said Woodbury Elementary will hold a kindergarten and new parent orientation at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 14 in the gymnasium. School officials are expected to provide more information on the dual language program offered at Woodbury.

"They're going to provide information to parents who are brand new to the program," Staker said.

Staker said on Aug. 16, parents are invited to attend an orientation at Lenihan Intermediate which will help parents withe the transition from elementary to intermediate school.

"This is to let parents know the difference between the two," Staker said. "It gets the kids ready for a different building and how things operate."

Also on the 16, Miller Middle School will hold its annual open house where students and parents can meet the new principal, sign up for athletics and tour the building. The open house will be 5 to 6 p.m. for seventh grade and 6 to 7 p.m. for eighth grade.

Staker said incoming freshman at Marshalltown High School will receive their schedules at orientation Monday, Aug. 20 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. and will be able to visit each of their classrooms and teachers.

"Students will see where their locker is, where their classes are and just know where everything is before the first day of school," Staker said.

Back-to-school night will be held Aug. 20 at all district elementary schools from 5 to 6 p.m. and at Lenihan Intermediate from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Staker said if you have not yet registered your child for school this fall, there is still time, but make sure to register as soon as possible.

"You can go to your neighborhood school and still register," Staker said.

The first day of classes for the MCSD is Aug. 21 and schools will dismiss one-hour early. Preschool starts Tuesday, Aug. 28.
