Woman steals more than $800 in gas

A Grinnell woman is charged with stealing gas 15 times since police began investigating her in April.

Karen Sanford, 27, turned herself in Monday afternoon on charges of third-degree theft, Capt. Hanken, with the Marshalltown Police Department, said.

Sanford stands accused of driving off with more than $800 worth of gas, most of which Sanford allegedly stole from Kum & Go on East Main Street, Hanken said.

If convicted, Sanford could have her driver's license revoked. Third-degree theft is an aggravated misdemeanor.

Dustin Big-Eagle, of Tama, made an initial appearance on a possession of drug paraphernalia charge, a possession of a Schedule I controlled substance/marijuana charge, an improper rear lamp charge, a no insurance charge and a driving while license is denied, cancelled, revoked or suspended charge. The public defender's office was appointed to handle his cases. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. Aug. 24. Big-Eagle was released on his own recognizance. The court ordered him to obtain a substance abuse evaluation and submit the results to the court within 60 days.

Carlos Sanchez-Barrera, 303 S. 3rd St., made an initial appearance on a failure to have a valid driver's license charge. Upon showing proof of driver's license the charge was dismissed and court costs were waived.

Darrell Shockley, 306 Bromley St. Apt. #11, made an initial appearance on a drinking in the park charge. He pleaded guilty and was fined $65 with a $22.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.75, due immediately.

John Peter Peter, 303 E. Boone St. Apt. #8, made an initial appearance on a alcohol in the park charge. He pleaded guilty and was fined $65 with a $22.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.75, due immediately.

Yolanda Erica Quezada, 512 E. State St., made an initial appearance on a driving while license is denied, cancelled, revoked or suspended charge. She pleaded guilty and was fined $250 with a $87.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $397.50, due immediately.

Scott Slocum, 1911 Summit St., made an initial appearance on a probation violation charge and a absence from custody charge. The public defender's office was appointed to handle his cases. The preliminary hearing on the absence from custody charge was set for 1 p.m. Aug. 17. Bond was set at $1,000 cash only. The probation revocation hearing is set for 9:30 a.m. Aug. 20. Bond is set at $5,000 cash only.

Luis Daniel Gutierrez-Garcia, 107 N. 5th Ave., made an initial appearance on a failure to have a valid driver's license charge, a no insurance charge and a reckless driving charge. He pleaded guilty to all charges. On the failure to have a valid driver's license charge the fine was $200 with a $70 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $330, due immediately. The court allowed for 43 hours of community service in lieu of the fine and surcharge plus pay court costs to be completed by Dec. 31.

The fine on the no insurance charge was $500 with a $175 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $735, due immediately. In lieu of the fine and surcharge the court allowed for 96 hours of community service plus pay the court costs to be completed by Dec. 31.

On the reckless driving charge the fine was $65 with a $22.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.75, due immediately. The court allowed for 19 hours of community service in lieu of the fine and surcharge plus pay court costs to be completed by Dec. 31.

Demetrias Kentrall Weatherly, 202 Sharon Ave., made an initial appearance on a criminal mischief, fifth degree charge. He pleaded guilty and was fined $65 with a $22.75 surcharge, a $125 law enforcement initiative surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $272.75, due immediately plus restitution if applicable. The bond was exonerated.

Stephanie Morgan Webber, 306 1/2 Bromley St. Apt. #5, made an initial appearance on a driving while license is denied, cancelled, revoked or suspended charge. She pleaded guilty and was fined $250 with a $87.50 and $60 in court costs for a total of $397.50, due immediately.

David Leroy Frazier, 5 S. 6th St. Apt. #5, made an initial appearance on a theft, fifth degree charge. The trial is set for 9:30 a.m. Sept. 14.

Jamell Arlene Goodman, of Melbourne, made an initial appearance on a interference with official acts charge and a disorderly conduct charge. Goodman pleaded guilty to the charge of interference with official acts and was fined $250 with a $87.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $397.50, due immediately. The disorderly conduct charge was dismissed with court costs of $60 assessed, due immediately.

Bradley Wayne Sparrow AKA Bradley Wayne Harrell, Transient, made an initial appearance on a possession of drug paraphernalia charge. The charge was dismissed and no court costs were assessed.

Accidents

On Thursday, a car driven by Kelsey Rose McHenry, 504 Brentwood Place, was southbound in the 300 block of South 12th Street when it veered to the west side of the roadway striking a stone retaining wall on the south side of a driveway at 303 S. 12th St., owned by Loras Neuroth. Passenger Megan McHenry, 504 Brentwood Place, received an bloody nose from the airbag deploying, but was not transported for treatment. McHenry was cited for failure to maintain control. Damage to the McHenry car was estimated at $6,000 while the Neuroth stone wall received an estimated $800 in damage.

On Thursday, a car driven by Emma Margaret Moeller, of Gladbrook, was southbound on South Center Street when it entered the intersection with Church Street on a red light and collided with a vehicle driven by Michele Mitchell Irwin, 2902 Arnold Drive, which was traveling west through the intersection. Moeller received possible injuries, but was not treated at the scene or transported. Moeller was cited for failure to obey a traffic control device. Damage to the Moeller car was estimated at $2,000 while the Irwin vehicle received an estimated $4,000 in damage.

On Thursday, a pickup driven by Wendy McLeod, 106 Santa Barbara Drive, was westbound on Pleasantview Road when the brakes failed at which time McLeod took evasive action and turned right striking the stop sign to avoid entering South Sixth Street traffic. No injuries were reported. Damage to the McLeod pickup was estimated at $1,600 while the stop sign owned by the city of Marshalltown received an estimated $300 in damage.
