The next building project for the Marshalltown Community College construction trades class was approved by the Iowa Valley Community College District Board of Directors at a meeting Wednesday.

Walter and Jan Wilkinson will have a 1,500 square foot addition, featuring a four-car garage, built by MCC students at 1935 Main Street Rd. west of Marshalltown. The Wilkinsons purchase the materials and save some money on labor costs by utilizing the students, who are building the addition for college credit.

"We're excited about the project," Jan Wilkinson said.

The annual student project will begin this fall and is led by MCC faculty member Russ Yarrow.

In other action by the board, the contract for the faculty at Iowa Valley for the 2012-13 school year was approved. The faculty members will receive a total package increase of 4 percent, which includes a 3.61 percent salary increase.

The next regular meeting of the college board is at 4 p.m. Sept. 12 at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls.
