FERGUSON - Marshall County Conservation Board Director Mike Stegmann calls the Green Castle Recreation Area one of the premier areas in the county for outdoor recreation.
An event Saturday will spotlight an upgrade that makes the park just south of Ferguson even more enticing for outdoor lovers.
The Gander Lookout shelter in the center of the park has been renovated and a free public open house will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. there Saturday.

The Gander Lookout shelter at Green Castle Recreation Area south of Ferguson has recently been renovated. An open house will be held at the facility from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
"Many of our amenities in the parks are getting aged and it was time to renovate this shelter," Stegmann said. "It gets used quite heavily."
There is a new roof, siding, stainless steel counter tops and sliding glass doors to make it more of an all-season structure. The deck at the shelter provides for a view from above the 16-acre lake.
The open house is designed to not only show off the new shelter, but bring people out to a park that features a lake prime for fishing, six bison and a trumpeter swan area.
