Celebrate community theater’s 50th season

August 19, 2012
David Engel, Marshalltown , Times-Republican

Just last week we celebrated the life of our dear Mayor, Gene Beach, following his untimely passing. Gene was a wonderful man who loved life and truly loved Marshalltown. One of his most passionate loves was for Marshalltown Community Theater.

I was honored to have acted in shows with Gene and to have him direct me in other productions. With his passing, the Marshalltown Community Theater loses its most avid supporter. To honor Gene's memory, I would like to encourage everyone in the Marshalltown area to support the Marshalltown Community Theater's 50th season this year through participating in any and every way they can.

Auditions for the first production, "Arsenic and Old Lace," will be this Sunday at 2 p.m. and Monday evening at 6 p.m. Other productions for the season include "On Golden Pond" and "Steel Magnolias." All of these shows are truly wonderful and will be great fun for everyone involved. Anyone with, or without, prior experience is encouraged to attend. If you may be interested in working backstage on set construction, lighting, sound, makeup, props, costumes or running crew please attend and make your desires known. It takes a large group of volunteers to create a successful production and everyone involved is important and becomes like family.

Community Theater is a tremendous way to contribute to the cultural life of our city. It is a vital component in keeping the quality of life in Marshalltown strong. If working on shows is not your "thing," then please support the theater by purchasing season tickets. The price is extremely low for such high quality entertainment. Season tickets are only $30 for adults and $15 for students.

I am sure Marshalltown Community Theater can have one of the most successful seasons ever on their Golden Anniversary if all of us pull together and contribute our talents and money to make this happen. I'm sure Gene's spirit will be out there in the audience along with us as we applaud our friends and neighbors onstage.
