Police are looking for the person who stole and lit a boat on fire Sunday night.

The Marshalltown Fire and Police Departments are asking for the public's assistance in gathering information related to the theft and subsequent arson, Marshall County Fire Marshal Deb Lundgren said.

The thief stole the boat, which the owner had attached to a flatbed trailer, from a storage unit at 1109 Iowa Ave. W. and towed it to the 1900 block of East Church Street. There, he or she set the boat ablaze, Lundgren said.

Capt. Mike Hanken, with the Marshalltown Police Department, said the incident is disturbing and that the MPD will look at all avenues.

Police are still investigating the incident, and reports do not indicate whether the thief targeted the owner or forced entry into the storage unit or whether the storage facility had surveillance cameras.

Lundgren said, although the fire department responded to the incident, the fire was already out when firefighters arrived. The fire was minor, and the fire department is more concerned with figuring out who is responsible.

The boat, a 2004 18-foot V bottom Tracker Tournament Edition, was stolen between 8 p.m. Sunday and 7:30 a.m. Monday. The fire and police departments urge anyone with information on the incident to contact the Marshalltown Fire Department at 641-754-5751 or 641-754-5725.
