John W. Smith, 56, of Marshalltown, died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012, at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, Aug. 27, 2012, at Hope United Methodist Church, in Marshalltown. Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 26, 2012, at Estel Perrin Avey Funeral Home, in Marshalltown. Interment will be at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens, in Marshalltown. John was born Aug. 6, 1956, to Jack V. and Norma (Lincoln) Smith in Marshalltown. He graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1974. He attended Marshalltown Community College. He married Kathleen VandeVoort on Jan. 7, 1977 in Leighton. They later divorced. He was united in marriage to Janine Hammes on Sept. 4, 2004 in Marshalltown. John was employed with Union Pacific Railroad as an engineer for 37 years. He was a member of Hope United Methodist Church and the American Legion Golf Course. John enjoyed trains and playing golf.
John will be missed by his wife, Janine; his parents Jack and Norma Smith, of Marshalltown; a daughter, Emily (Brian) Andersen, of Mitchell, S.D.; a son, Joseph W. Smith, of Pella; a step daughter, Jacque (Jason) Hauschild, of Cedar Rapids; three granddaughters: Madalyn, Lindsay and Brooke Andersen; four step grandchildren; a sister, Judy (Larry) O'Neil, of Marshalltown; a brother, Terry (Becky) Smith, of Marshalltown, two nieces and a nephew.
