CONRAD - BCLUW broke free early and finished off GMG for a season-opening high school volleyball sweep on Tuesday night.
The host Comets prevailed by scores of 25-10, 25-11, 25-19 in the non-conference clash.
Reeba Box led BCLUW with eight kills, while Olivia Callaway and Nicole Montgomery added five kills apiece. Kendall Scurr had four.
Nicollete Simpson racked up 21 assists and was 15-for-17 serving with three aces. Box went 23-for-25 from the service line with 10 aces, and also led with four digs and three blocks.
Caitlin Appelgate led GMG with two kills to go along with a block. Olivia Barrett and Sara Hinson both had a kill and an ace serve. Mikaella Koster had two set assists and Mackenzie Burt one.
GMG hosts Cedar Valley Christian tonight, while BCLUW travels to face Class 2A preseason No. 1 Dike-New Hartford.
Valley JV swims past Marshalltown
Raechel Hannam won the 50-yard freestyle Tuesday night, but it wasn't enough to stop West Des Moines Valley for spoiling the Bobcats home opener in JV action at the Marshalltown pool.
The Valley JV dominated most of the races and beat the Bobcats, 135-43, but several Bobcat swimmers recorded personal-best times in the pool.
Marshalltown head coach Angie Nelson said freshman Lexie McCown scored time drops in both of her varsity races in teh 100 butterfly and 50 freestyle. Freshman Brianna Reynolds also had a personal-best time in the 100 backstroke, while freshman Alexis Schneider had a personal-record in the 100 freestyle, placing fourth in the varsity portion of the race. Junior Melisa Fonseca also recorded personal best times in the 100 and 50 freestyle.
