AMES - Senior Connor Johnson shot a 79 and senior Riley Wirth fired an 85 on Monday as the Marshalltown boys golf team fired a 342 during tournament action at the Turk Bowman Invitational at the Ames Country Club.
The Bobcats finished 12th out of 20 teams, trailing a host of CIML schools. Waukee won the event with a 294, while West Des Moines Valley was next at 299. Host Ames was third, Johnston fourth and the Waukee junior varsity fifth.
"Connor has been one of our most consistent golfers all season," Marshalltown coach Lucas Johnson said. "Other than a triple bogey on No. 7, his play was rock solid all Waukee's Mike Woofer and Connor Littlefield both shot a 72 to take medalist and runner-up honors, respectively. Five of Waukee's six varsity golfers shot below 80 on the day. Waukee's JV also feature two scores under 80.
The Bobcats' other two counting scores came from Sam Weatherman and Bradin Chaloupek. Weatherman fired an 88, while Chaloupek carded a 90. Cole Stalzer had a 96 and Drayton Lents shot a 102.
"Bradin can take a lot of positives away from havng a counting score in his varsity match," Lucas Johnson said. "He's one of the biggest hitters on the team and his ball flight was well suited to the windy conditions. He'll be a solid player for us if he continues to work on his game on and around the greens."
The Bobcats are next in action Friday at the Joe August Invitational in Marshalltown. The tournament will be played at Elmwood Country Club and will begin at 10 a.m.
