A 14-year-old from Marshalltown died Friday at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines from injuries that occurred during an ATV accident.
Mario Ortega, a freshman at Marshalltown High School, was involved in the incident Sept. 6 in which he was thrown from the all terrain vehicle.
The accident occurred along Marion Street near 10th Avenue in a grassy area, where Ortega was a passenger and not wearing a helmet. The ATV was driven by 18-year-old Derick Bear.
Marshalltown Police Department Capt. Brian Batterson said Monday he is unsure if Bear will be have charges against him as a result of the accident.
"I know the case is still under investigation," Batterson said.
Bear previously was arrested for evading police for an Aug. 31 incident on his ATV. Police attempted to pull him over for driving on the street, which is illegal.
Funeral services for Ortega will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be directed in Mario's name to Great Western Bank.
