NEWTON - A roster-full of season-best times netted the West Marshall boys' cross country team fourth place out of seven squads competing at the Newton Invitational on Tuesday at Westwood Golf Course.
Nathan Bradley and Austin McCool both medaled for their performances in the meet, with Bradley placing fourth in a time of 17:24 and McCool finishing 16th in 18:02.
Tanner Arnold came in 24th (18:37) and Cole White was 26th (18:52), with Hunter Wilkening's 34th-place effort (19:30) rounding out West Marshall's team scoring.
East Marshall was close behind the Trojans in fifth place, with Ben Terrones taking 10th in 17:45 and Caleb Benzing scoring 15th (18:00) to medal for the Mustangs. Rob Petrie placed 21st and Drew Schossow was 22nd, both in 18:31, with Tristin Danner (41st, 22:10) rounding out the team score.
Class 3A No. 5-ranked Grinnell won the boys' half with a 38 team total. Host Newton was second with 58, followed by Knoxville (92), West Marshall (104), East Marshall (109), Des Moines Lincoln (112) and Des Moines East (205).
Three East Marshall girls medaled as the team took fourth place. Haley Fye (12th, 16:38), Kristen Amendt (13th, 16:39) and Paige Miller (16th, 16:50) led the way for the Mustangs. Kaylee Howe came in 33rd (19:17) and Mariah Fritz 43rd (20:39) for East Marshall.
Victoria Pothast medaled for her 15th-place finish (16:45) in leading the West Marshall girls to seventh. Maggie Sodders scored 36th in 19:47, followed by Ashley Pfantz (41st, 20:15), Carly Kielman (42nd, 20:15) and Kalie Weuve (49th, 23:00).
Des Moines Roosevelt, ranked 11th in 4A, finished atop the girls field with 28 points. Class 3A No. 8 Grinnell was second (44) and Newton was third (75). East Marshall collected 117 points for fourth place, followed by Knoxville (130), Des Moines East (178), West Marshall (183) and Des Moines Lincoln (184).
West Marshall is back in action Thursday at the PCM Invite in Monroe, while East Marshall is off until Monday's Nevada Invite at Hickory Grove Park near Colo.
