SPORTS SHORTS: West Marshall boys run to 4th at PCM

MONROE - Nathan Bradley was sixth and Austin McCool also scored a top 20 finish Thursday as the West Marshall boys cross country team took fourth at the PCM Invitational.

The Trojans finished with 116 points. Knoxville was first at 54 points, Ballard ended up with 69 and Class 2A No. 5 North Polk was third with 94.

The West Marshall girls were seventh out of seven teams but Victoria Pothast grabbed a 10th place finish.

Class 1A No. 10 Davis County and Ballard both scored 52 points, but Davis County won the tiebreaker. Class 2A No. 8 North Polk was third with 74 points. West Marshall ended up with 154 points.

McCool finished 19th on the boys side, while Cole White was 26th, Tanner Arnold was 29th and Hunter Wilkening ended up 36th.

After Pothast, the top girls' finisher was Rachel Knights in 41st and Ashley Pfantz in 49th. Carly Kielman was 52nd and Maggie Sodders was 53rd.

PCM hosted the meet but did not have a full varsity lineup in either race.

GMG loses in straight sets

GARWIN - Olivia Barrett had three kills, one ace, one block and one dig to lead the GMG volleyball team against Don Bosco on Thursday night but the Dons handed the Wolverines a straight-set loss.

Don Bosco won the Iowa Star Conference match 25-9, 25-8, 25-18.

Peyton Mannan had two digs for the Wolverines, while Caitlin Appelgate added two digs and one kill.

Cougars edged twice

ACKLEY - The AGWSR volleyball team (5-15) dropped a pair of three set decisions to North Butler and Wapsie Valley at home Thursday.

The Cougars lost a 2-1 match to North Butler 25-22, 22-25, 16-14. Ella Frazier led AGWSR with 13 kills and Molly Boheman added eight.

The Cougars fell to Wapsie Valley 25-20, 22-25, 15-13. Frazier led again up front with eight kills. Kristen Zacharias recorded seven kills and Boheman added six.

AGWSR returns to action against West Marshall on the road Tuesday.

QB Club to meet today

The Bobcat Quarterback Club will meet again at noon Friday at the Junction Lounge Bar & Grill. The event is open to any Bobcat supporter.

This week's speakers include coaches Tim Bell, Terri Westendorf and David Holdiman.
