T-R writer Rick Deines really knows how to tell a story. I never missed his writing when he was a T-R sports writer and columnist, and so I was delighted to read his marvelous tribute to long-time Elmwood golf pro Joe August. As usual, Rick made it a fun read.
Although I played a lot of golf before moving back to Marshalltown, I gave it up to search for fish and wild game instead of lost golf balls. I never belonged to Elmwood, but Joe and I still were friends. He always stopped in to visit me at the office when there and we would have a good chat wherever we happened to meet. His ready smile and bouncy step showed his optimism for everything.
He brought great distinction not only to Elmwood for his achievements in club improvements but to Marshalltown as well because he was so highly respected in Iowa and in national golf circles. The many honors he achieved were well deserved. Thanks to Rick for letting us know even more about a fine man and his legacy.
