MADRID - The West Marshall volleyball team went 3-2 in the Madrid Tournament on Saturday and reached the championship match.
On the day, the Trojans defeated Collins-Maxwell-Baxter, Iowa Christian Academy and Madrid in straight sets and lost to North Polk in three games. The loss to Class 2A state-ranked Woodward-Granger in the finals was in straight sets.
The Trojans defeated CMB 21-10, 21-12, dumped Iowa Christian Academy 21-6, 21-10 and then beat Madrid 25-18, 25-20. North Polk beat West Marshall 21-11, 19-21, 15-11 in pool play and W-G knocked off the Trojans 25-18, 25-16.
Whitney Benson had 21 kills and seven blocks to lead the Trojans on the day. McKenna Hotopp added 19 kills and six aces, while Kaitlyn Nichols contributed 17 kills. Sydney Beals had 15 kills, 12 aces, three blocks and was 53-of-55 in serving.
Alarie Craven dished out 67 assists and served up six aces. Hotopp led the team in digs with 27, while Beals had 15 digs.
West Marshall is now 16-10 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
The Trojans travel to Gladbrook-Reinbeck on Tuesday for a conference match against the rival Rebels.
