Emma Bair, 9, a fourth grader at Hoglan Elementary School, works on some math problems in class last week.

He also has come to rely on her to help get a message across to other students if he needs to.

"She is extremely open-hearted with other students," Burke said. "She cares about helping people and is very patient when other students are struggling."

Bair, 9, said she believes in being nice to others.

"You don't want to be mean to other people because they don't want to be hurt," Bair said.

Bair's favorite subject is math and she said one day she would like to become a dentist.
