Thursday

Ernesto Garcia, 411 N. Center St., made an initial appearance on a possession of a Schedule I controlled substance, marijuana, charge and a possession of drug paraphernalia charge. The public defender's office was appointed to handle his cases. The preliminary hearing was set for 1 p.m. on Oct. 23. Garcia was released on his own recognizance. The court ordered that he obtain a substance abuse evaluation and submit the results to the court within 60 days.

Daniela Castellanos, 108 N. 12th St., made an initial appearance on an arrest warrant issuance for failure to appear for a contempt hearing charge on a failure to pay driving under suspension conviction. The contempt hearing is rescheduled for 9 a.m. on Oct. 29 in Magistrate Court. Bond will continue as posted.

Diego Villa Magena, 108 N. 12th St., made an initial appearance on a possession of a Schedule I controlled substance, marijuana, charge and three counts of a child endangerment without injury charge. The public defender's office was appointed to handle his cases. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on Oct. 23. Villa Magena was released on his own recognizance. The court ordered that he obtain a substance abuse evaluation and submit the results to the court within 60 days.

Jesus Edmundo Cristanos, of Fort Dodge, made an initial appearance on an application for contempt of court charge for failing to complete a batterer's education course. The court appointed Merrill Swartz to represent him in this case. The contempt hearing is set for 10 a.m. on Nov. 7. Cristanos was released on his own recognizance.

Brandon Joe Godfrey, of Leon, made an initial appearance on three counts of violation of pre-trial release: a interference with official acts charge, an assault on a peace officer and interference with official acts causing bodily injury charge and a willful injury domestic abuse assault charge. He also made an initial appearance on two probation violation charges by incurring new criminal charges in both counts. The public defender's office was appointed for all charges. In the violation of pre-trial release charges the pre-trial conferences are set for 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 5 and the jury trials are set for 9 a.m. on Oct. 11. The probation revocation hearings are set for 9 a.m. on Oct. 24. No bond was permitted in the interference with official acts and assault on a peace officer, interference with official acts causing bodily injury charges. On the willful injury, domestic abuse assault charge the bond is set at $5,000 cash only. The two probation violation charges have bonds set at $5,000, each cash or surety.

Monday

The Marshalltown Fire Department responded to an outside rubbish fire at 201 N. 2nd Ave., an extrication of victims on East Main Street and three medical assists with the EMS crew to: 107 S. 2nd St., 511 E. Church St., and 2130 S. 2nd St.

Tuesday

The Marshalltown Fire Department responded to a building fire at 1401 S. 7th Ave., and three medical assists with the EMS crew to: 8 S. 13th St., 1211 W. State St., and 134 E. Main St.

Wednesday

The Marshalltown Fire Department responded to an alarm system activation, no fire, unintentional at 823 S. 19th Ave., a trash or rubbish fire at 2501 S. Center St., and four medical assists with the EMS crew to: 205 E. Ferner St., 802 S. Center St., 20 E. State St., and 2009 Catalina Place.

Accidents

On Tuesday, a car driven by Donald Ray Lubbert, of Gladbrook, was eastbound on East Main Street Road when it struck a deer that entered the traveled portion of the roadway causing functional damage to the front end. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Lubbert car was estimated at $2,500.

Citations

On Wednesday, Mary Alexandra Valdovinos, 410 N. 15th Ave., was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia.

On Sept. 29, Justin Scott Welder, 1611 S. 4th St., was cited for dog at large and failure to provide proof of rabies vaccination.

On Sept. 20, Deandre Davis, 10 N. 7th St., was cited for assault causing bodily injury.

Accidents

On Tuesday, a car driven by Kimberly Denise Wallace, 2607 Governor Rd., was westbound on West Main Street near the Franklin School area when it pulled to the right and attempted a u-turn in front of a vehicle driven by Kolby Catherine Erickson, 1914 W. Main Street, and the two collided. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Wallace car was estimated at $4,000 while the Erickson vehicle received an estimated $5,000 in damage.
