A nationally-known speaker on the Catholic faith is coming for a special four-night event being dubbed a parish renewal at St. Henry's Catholic Church.

Michael Cumbie will speak for four nights, each beginning at 7 p.m. at the church from Oct. 14 through 17. The event is free and open to the public and not just for Catholics.

Cumbie, of Foley, Ala., was a Protestant pastor for 23 years before converting to the Catholic church.

"The idea was to bring in someone who has an extraordinary appreciation for the Catholic faith," said Pompilio Bermudez, one of the local organizers of the event.

Bermudez saw Cumbie's story on a program on EWTN, the Catholic television network.

"I was very impressed with his ministry and his deep knowledge of scripture and his great humor," Bermudez said.

He said the goal of the renewal is for Catholics to take a step back and look at their faith.

"The ultimate objective is for Catholics to gain an appreciation of the history and the fullness of their faith," Bermudez said. "It's also to give people a refresher and hopefully strengthen their faith."

Registration is not necessary as Bermudez said visitors can just show up the nights of the presentations. For more information on the event contact St. Henry's at 641-753-7374.
