OSKALOOSA - The Marshalltown volleyball team met its match in Class 1A's top-ranked Grundy Center Spartans - twice.
Grundy Center (26-4) defeated Marshalltown two times during Saturday's Oskaloosa Invite, including a 2-0 sweep of the Bobcats in the championship match.
Marshalltown swept Centerville (21-17, 21-10) and Class 3A No. 4 Nevada (21-17, 21-18) before falling to Grundy Center (21-9, 21-13) to round out pool play.
The Bobcats rebounded to eliminate the tournament hosts, Class 4A No. 15-ranked Oskaloosa, in the semifinals, 25-22, 25-18.
Grundy Center finished off its 5-0 day with a 25-20, 25-19 sweep of MHS for the title.
"We did some fantastic things against Grundy Center when we stuck with the gameplan," said Bobcat head coach Terri Westendorf. "There were some moments we just couldn't get the passes we needed, but the girls gave a great effort. That's probably the best we've played against a tough team like that.
"Losing to Grundy twice is frustrating but you've got to put it into perspective."
Eisha Oden led MHS with 38 kills on the day, while Lauren Mazour added 33 and Miranda Smith 18. Madi Bellile racked up 88 assists.
Morgan Bellile led with 41 digs, Mazour had 37 and Leiah Paustian added 28. Smith's four blocks paced the defense, while Mazour and Paustian both had three.
Smith also served up seven aces, four straight in the win over Nevada.
Marshalltown returns to action with Tuesday's road trip to Ames for a conference match.
