PREP VOLLEYBALL: No. 1 Spartans stand atop Oskaloosa Invite

OSKALOOSA - The Grundy Center volleyball team wrapped up its first tournament title of the season by going 5-0 at the Oskaloosa Invitational on Saturday.

Class 1A's top-ranked Spartans (26-4) swept through pool play with wins over Centerville (21-9, 21-10), Marshalltown (21-9, 21-12) and 3A No. 4 Nevada (21-14, 21-15).

In the semifinals, Grundy Center handled Gilbert (25-11, 25-19) and then turned back Marshalltown a second time (25-20, 25-19).

Sam Meyers led the Spartans with 49 kills on the day, with Riley Ackerman adding 31 kills and Stephanie Faust 17. Setter Heather Hook had 90 assists and a team-high 10 blocks while serving 40-for-44 with nine aces.

Libero player Riley Sents totaled 88 digs and Peyton Ralston added 32 digs. Ackerman served 36-for-39 with nine aces, and Noel Saak added five aces.

Grundy Center tries to close out NICL West play unbeaten as South Tama visits Tuesday night.

Cougars 2-2 at Hudson

HUDSON - The AGWSR volleyball team went 2-2 in Saturday's Hudson Invitational. The Cougars defeated Iowa Valley (12-21, 21-17, 15-10) and Waukon (21-19, 21-18), but lost a pair of three-setters to Edgewood-Colesburg (15-21, 21-19, 16-14) and Hudson (25-21, 21-25, 15-10).

Ella Frazier paced the Cougars with 28 kills, while Shelbi Nederhoff had 17 and Jayne Wiarda 13. Wiarda totaled 66 assists and served 52-for-56 with four aces.

Alexa Johnson contributed a team-high 10 aces, while Nederhoff led with 12 blocks. Olivia Ingledue charted 41 digs.

AGWSR (9-21) closes the regular season with an NICL West match Tuesday at BCLUW.

Tigers have 1-3 weekend

HAMPTON - The South Hardin volleyball squad went 1-3 at Saturday's Hampton-Dumont Invite, scoring a sweep of the hosts during pool play.

South Hardin beat the Bulldogs (21-13, 21-14) for their lone win. The Tigers fell to Roland-Story and Kuemper Catholic twice.

Ellen Swartz had seven of her team-leading 20 kills during the win over Hampton-Dumont. Kayla Prosser racked up 19 kills, 50 assists, six blocks and seven aces, and Sarah Boomgarden added five blocks and 10 kills. Mikayla Fisher and Haley Lawrence both had 11 kills, while Alaina Lake led with 37 digs.

South Hardin (7-16) has a busy slate ahead - Monday at GMG, Tuesday vs. Gladbrook-Reinbeck, Thursday vs. Colo-NESCO, and Saturday at the Woodward-Granger Tournament.
