SPORTS SHORTS: Tigers take down East Marshall netters

GRINNELL - Host Grinnell defeated East Marshall in Monday's non-conference volleyball match, sweeping the Mustangs 25-13, 25-5, 25-15.

Annaliese Wiltfang led the host Tigers (19-8) with five kills, Liz Nelson had four while both Sierre Schultz and Regan Sharp had three kills. Grinnell served 65-for-69 for the night with nine aces.

East Marshall (4-16) got a team-high four kills from Kelsea Anderson, while Katie Roseland and Claire Johnson had three apiece. All three Mustangs had two blocks apiece.

Callie Roseland served 9-for-10 with two aces and had a team-leading 10 digs, while Katie Roseland added nine digs and Madisen Hinegardner had eight.

Ashley Allen had eight assists and Haley Long added seven for the Mustangs, who close out NICL West Division play tonight at West Marshall. East Marshall hosts GMG in Thursday's regular season finale.

Hanus named to Scholar-Athlete list

DUBUQUE - University of Dubuque senior quarterback Wyatt Hanus has been selected as a candidate for the 2012 National Football Foundation's National Scholar-Athlete Awards.

Hanus, a North Tama graduate, maintains a 3.85 grade point average as a double major in accounting and business marketing with a minor in coaching. He volunteers his free time with the YMCA, Special Olympics, a homeless shelter, as a soccer referee, and is helping organize a fundraising effort for the Spartans' homecoming game on Saturday to help fight Alzheimers disease.

On the field, Hanus leads the Iowa Conference with an average of 333 passing yards per game.

As a junior, Hanus was a first-team all-conference selection, an academic all-conference pick and a second-team academic All-American. He finished the season 265-of-363 for 3,490 yards and a Dubuque record 44 touchdown passes.

ISU holding food drive on Saturday

AMES - Iowa State's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is holding a 'Can the Cats' food drive Saturday before the ISU football game against Kansas State.

Iowa State student-athletes will be collecting donations before the game from the paved parking lots around Jack Trice Stadium from 7:30-10:30 a.m., pushing shopping carts provided by HyVee.

The food drive is being held in conjunction with the Food Bank of Iowa, which distributes food to 425 partner organizations in 55 Iowa counties.

Panthers' Homecoming golf outing set

CEDAR FALLS - The 2012 UNI Panther Homecoming golf outing has been set for Oct. 19 at the Red Carpet Golf Course in Waterloo.

Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. until noon, when the two-person best shot event will begin with a shotgun start. Entry fee is $75 per person and includes green fees, cart, beverage tickets, a UNI Titleist visor and game ticket to Northern Iowa's Homecoming football game against South Dakota State on Oct. 20.
