She can't vote yet, but 11-year-old Haley McDonald still believes she can have an impact on the Nov. 6 election as a volunteer. The sixth grader at Lenihan Intermediate School is a big supporter of the re-election campaign for President Barack Obama and got interested when she learned about the election in class.
She has gone door-to-door looking to sign up people to vote and to recruit other volunteers for the campaign.
"It's fun," McDonald said. "I like to be involved in different things that others my age aren't."

Haley McDonald, 11, holds a Barack Obama campaign sign in her home. The Lenihan Intermediate School sixth grader has been volunteering for the campaign.
She is the daughter of David and Laurie McDonald of Marshalltown. Laurie said she didn't push her to support Obama and she is happy that her daughter is getting out and learning about the community. Her mother is not surprised how far Haley has taken this effort.
"When she gets passionate about something, there's no stopping here," Laurie McDonald said. "If she believes it, she's going to stand up for it."
The young campaigner said she likes Obama because "he treats everybody equally."
Her family was out of town when Obama visited Marshalltown this summer, but she did get to meet Ashley Judd when the actress was in town campaigning for the president last month.
"She was surprised that I was only 11," McDonald said of Judd.
When she is not campaigning or in school, McDonald likes to write stories and read.
So with her head start in politics, is a run for president in her future?
"Maybe," she said.
