No. 1 Spartans square off with the best

SIOUX CITY - Playing against its toughest competition of the season, Class 1A's top-ranked Grundy Center volleyball team went 2-2 Saturday at the Sioux City Heelan Classic.

The Spartans earned wins over Class 5A No. 1 Ankeny and Class 4A No. 2 Sioux City Bishop Heelan, but lost to Class 2A No. 1 Western Christian and nationally ranked No. 1 Papillion LaVista South.

Papillion LaVista South began the tournament with a 25-15, 25-11 victory over Grundy Center (29-6). The Spartans then rebounded in their next match and knocked off Ankeny, 20-25, 25-23, 15-13.

Another loss came in the third match of the weekend as Western Christian handed the Spartans a 25-16, 26-24 loss. The final win for Grundy Center came against host Sioux City Bishop Heelan as the Spartans claimed a 25-23, 21-25, 15-10 win.

Sam Meyers led the Spartans with 41 kills and five aces, while Heather Hook added 82 assists and five aces. Riley Ackerman also had 26 kills, and Riley Sents contributed 84 digs and seven aces.

The Spartans begin postseason play tonight in Grundy Center against GMG. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
