Local man charged with enhanced assault

Three prior domestic assault convictions enhanced a local man's simple assault to a felony charge Thursday evening.

Melvin Martin Jr., 31, allegedly shoved his 32-year-old live-in girlfriend to the couple's couch just after 5 p.m. and began striking her in the head with a leather gym bag, said Capt. Mike Hanken, with the Marshalltown Police Department.

The two have a young son who apparently was not present at the time of the alleged assault. The victim did not need medical attention, Hanken said.

Police charged Martin with domestic assault. The prior convictions enhance the charge from a simple misdemeanor to a Class D felony.

Man allegedly tries to strangle girlfriend

Police arrested a Marshalltown man Thursday evening after his girlfriend alleged that he tried to strangle her, and falsely imprisoned her during a dispute.

Matthew Sumpter, 27, faces domestic assault with attempted strangulation, a Class D felony, and false imprisonment, a serious misdemeanor, charges.

The victim, 19, fled to the YMCA/YWCA just after 5 p.m. following the alleged attack, said Capt. Mike Hanken, with the Marshalltown Police Department.

After police examined the woman and determined that she had been assaulted, they subsequently arrested Sumpter just after 7 p.m. after visiting him at the couple's home on Player Street.

The victim did not need medical attention. The court issued a no contact order for Sumpter on the woman.
