Rev. Leonardo Cabrera, left, of Kansas City, is joined by interpreter Brady Rodgers also of Kansas City, at Marshalltown’s New Hope Christian Church Monday afternoon. Cabrera, a native of Cuba, gave a presentation on the importance of religious freedom to area ministers and others.
He was imprisoned in 1993 by the Cuban government for preaching Christianity and religious writings. Cabrera said Cuban authorities murdered his brother in retaliation for his writings and to intimidate him from further Christian-related work.
He later was released after intercession by Pope John Paul II. Cabrera now heads a large Hispanic church in Kansas City. Cabrera and Rodgers were also scheduled at Marshalltown’s Liberty Baptist Church Monday night. The two began a tour of Iowa churches Sunday in Des Moines and will conclude Tuesday in Council Bluffs.
