MURRAY - An early 30-point hole proved too much for the Colo-NESCO football team (7-4) to overcome in a 64-40 loss to No. 2 ranked Murray (11-0) in eight-man second round action Monday.
Austin Halls tossed four touchdowns - all to Cody Scroggie - and ran for two more to lead the Mustangs past the Royals for the second time this season. Murray won the previous meeting 87-44 at Colo in Week 8.
A 59-yard scamper from Adam Lytle pulled the Royals within 30-16 but Colo-NESCO couldn't draw any closer the rest of the night. Leading 44-28 midway through the third, Murray put the game out of reach when Halls raced 28 yards to paydirt for his final score of the evening, giving the Mustangs a 58-28 advantage to close the quarter.
Brandyn Niemeyer paced the Royals with three touchdowns including a 64-yard kickoff return. Niemeyer finished with 203 yards rushing on 33 carries, while Lytle tacked on 90 yards. Tyler Erickson added 55 yards, highlighted by a 53-yard scoring run.
Murray advances to the quarterfinals to host ninth-ranked Adair-Casey (10-1).
