In 2000, I supported the Republican candidate for the Iowa House, and even was the voice of radio spots supporting her. It was with some hesitation when I first called Rep. Mark Smith, who won that election, and asked for his help on an issue. My concerns quickly subsided. Mark was professional, caring and effective in resolving that issue.
That has been the case during the time he has been in office: the residents of the Iowa Veterans Home have never seen an elected official devote so much time and energy to us. When we ask for his help, he comes out to meet with us. Because of Mark's efforts, there has a great deal of legislation that has helped veterans across our state and people who reside in long-term care facilities.
Because of Mark's help, I have established a relationship with a number of major political figures. Almost all presidential candidates, both Republican and Democrat, come to the Iowa Veterans Home. Before Mark, almost none came here. It is easy for people in the community to come to events at the Veterans Home and often difficult for residents to go to events in the community. Mark understands that and has done what he can to bring the world to us.
In the 2012 election, I will be voting for Mark again and encourage everyone to do the same. Thank you.
