Helen Berg, 98, of Marshalltown, died early Wednesday morning, November 7, 2012 at the MMSC.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, November 9, at the Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. in the Lane Chapel at Riverside Cemetery. Born Helen Bohen on July 23, 1914, in Marshalltown, she was the daughter of Walter and Freda (Kohler) Bohen. She graduated from the Marshalltown High School in 1932 and later from the Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls with her teacher's certificate. Years later, she received her BA from UNI. Mrs. Berg began the first kindergarten class in the Gowrie Public Schools.
On June 9, 1940, she was united in marriage to John Ellis "Pink" Berg. They made their home in Iowa Falls for a short time and then moved to her hometown of Marshalltown where she taught school at Rogers from 1950 until retiring in 1979. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, a 50 year member of the PEO JU Chapter, past Elmwood Country Club Member, Amity, Starpha, Early American Glass Club, Saturday evening bridge club, Central Iowa Art Association and enjoyed traveling with the Y on trips.
Left to cherish her memory are her son, Richard (Ann) Berg of Marshalltown, daughter-in-law Sharon Berg of Marshalltown, grandson Chad (Amanda) Berg and their children Addison and Tegan of Cedar Rapids and nephew and nieces- John and Janet Collison, Beth Collison and Anne (Paul) Johnson.
In death, Helen rejoined her husband (1957), son David (1974), parents and sisters Bernice (Dr. Lloyd) Law and Margaret (Guilford) Collison.
