The historic Estel-Perrin-Avey Funeral Home at 212 E. State St. in Marshalltown is shown. The property is one of four central Iowa funeral homes included in a sale to Anderson Funeral Homes of Conrad by Vogel Funeral Homes of Marshalltown. Future plans for the property include landscaping and other improvements.
The Andersons also announced name changes for the four.
Pursel-Davis will be known as the Main Street Chapel of the Anderson Funeral Homes, Estel-Perrin-Avey will be the State Street Chapel, the Johnston Funeral Home will be the Conrad Chapel, and the Goettsch Funeral Home will be the Gladbrook Chapel.
Vogel Brooks will retain ownership of Rose Hill Memorial Gardens in Marshalltown.
The mortuary business is a second career for Jody, who was previously in sales.
"A funeral director friend encouraged me to enter the profession," he said. "I did, and found it to be my calling."
He joined Vogel Brooks several years ago and later became partner.
Joining Jody in day-to-day operations will be Amy, who will serve as office manager.
Veteran Marshalltown funeral director Rick LeMasters will be part of Anderson Funeral Homes as well. LeMasters was on staff at Vogel Brooks.
"I am extremely pleased Rick will be staying on with us until he retires," Jody said. "Rick was a highly respected member of the Vogel Brooks staff. I learned much from him when I started here, and am looking forward to working with him in this new venture."
Jody said his experience will aid him in serving families and others.
"I am a Desert Storm veteran, and am extremely familiar with the needs and concerns families have for veterans funeral services," he said. "I have much experience in accurately processing necessary government forms for a veterans burial."
Jody commented that central Iowa funeral homes and late owners have a renown heritage.
"Estel-Perrin-Avey funeral home is historic - it served Roman Catholic families well for many years," he said. "The woodwork - and other features in the building are outstanding. In reading the history of funeral home directors like Hugh Davis, and others, I came away impressed - they were highly regarded by their peers and in their communities. Amy and I want to carry on that same tradition with our four funeral homes."
A Clinton native, Jody is a member of the Marshalltown Young Professionals, Marshalltown YMCA-YWCA, Conrad American Legion and Conrad Presbyterian Church.
The Andersons reside in Conrad with daughters Lauren and Sydney.
