The Marshalltown Area Chamber of Commerce is endorsing the third-annual Small Business Saturday.
In 2010, American Express began promoting the day, which falls neatly between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, as a shopping holiday geared to prompt consumers to support small local businesses.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 24, 19 area businesses will give away a $150 gift cards to patrons. Energy 106.7 FM, KDAO-FM and KIX 101.1 FM listeners can also enter for a chance to win one of 46 $25 gift cards Monday through Wednesday.
U.S Chamber of Commerce and American Express provide local Chambers able to rally at least 10 small businesses to participate with $5,000 in pre-paid American Express gift cards.
Lynn Olberding, vice president of the Marshalltown Area Chamber of Commerce, said the chamber is offering shoppers a Shop Small passport. Shoppers who get their passport stamped by at least five participating businesses will be eligible to win one of four $250 grand prize gift cards.
"The whole idea is to encourage people to shop at small businesses," she said. "We wanted people to get into those stores and think about those stores not just on this Saturday but all year round."
