SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat sophomores score a victory

DES MOINES - The Marshalltown sophomore boys' basketball team started its season with a 43-31 win over Des Moines Hoover on Tuesday night. The Bobcats held the Huskies to 12 points in the first half.

Grant Thimesch led Marshalltown with 20 points. Austin Lovin scored 13 points and Justin Smith added eight points.

Marshalltown (1-0) will go on the road to play Des Moines Roosevelt on Friday.

MHS JV matmen cancel trip to North

The Marshalltown High School junior varsity wrestling squad will no longer be attending Saturday's tournament at Des Moines North, the MHS athletic office announced Wednesday.

The Bobcat varsity squad is set to attend the Independence Invitational, while the freshman/sophomore contingent will be traveling to Ames.

Bobcat Quarterback Club set for Friday

The MHS Quarterback Club will meet Friday at the Junction Lounge Bar & Grill for the second time this winter. Featured this week will be first-year head wrestling coach Mike Mann, boys' basketball coach Scott Smith and girls' basketball coach Tim Johnson.

North Tama to host baseball clinic

TRAER - North Tama High School will be hosting a baseball clinic for pitchers and catchers on Dec. 9 featuring Rick Mathews, the special assistant for baseball operations with the Colorado Rockies.

Mathews is a Drake University graduate who has been the Rockies' bullpen coach since 2002. He will be joined in instruction by Jonathan Mathews, a former member of the Minnesota Twins, and Brandon Crisp, an assistant coach at Indian Hills Community College.

The day will be divided into two sessions by age, with players age 10-12 meeting from 9:30 a.m. until noon, and players 13-18 meeting from 12:30-3 p.m. at the North Tama gymnasium.
