STATE CENTER - Two brothers are in jail after a dispute escalated to violence Thursday night.

Dustin Umbaugh, 31, and Zachary Umbaugh, 33, both of State Center, face assault charges after Zachary allegedly broke into Dustin's home at 310 Third St. SW with the intent to assault him.

Dustin responded by allegedly bludgeoning his older brother with a baseball bat.

The two men live a few blocks from each other, said State Center Police Chief Jeff Bunn. The altercation spilled out into the yard and had been going on for roughly five minutes before police arrived. He said he did not know what prompted the violence.

Bunn said Zachary did not force his way into Dustin's home, but that the intent to commit an assault is enough to charge him with burglary.

Police charged Zachary with second-degree burglary, a Class C felony, and serious assault causing bodily harm, a serious misdemeanor. Dustin faces a charge of assault causing serious injury, a Class D felony.

Ambulances transported the men to Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center where they were treated and released prior to being jailed.

Zachary's bond is set at $10,000 while Dustin's is set at $5,000.

The court issued no-contact orders for both men; they will have their preliminary hearings Dec. 10.
