INDEPENDENCE - Five of Marshalltown High School's 11 wrestlers placed in the top six but the Bobcats came in last out of nine teams at Saturday's Independence Invitational.
Class 3A No. 5-ranked Cedar Rapids Prairie picked up 235.5 points for the team title, while 1A No. 1-rated Alburnett (190.5) was second.
Marshalltown was led by senior heavyweight Pedro Gomez, who reached the finals before suffering a 4-0 loss by decision to Prairie's fourth-ranked Andrew Netolicky.
Freshman Josh Edel placed fourth at 152 pounds for MHS, moving up from his eighth seed with a pair of pins during a 3-2 day.
Derek Mann, a 182-pound junior, went 2-2 with two pins on his way to fifth place. Agustin Ortiz (152) was 2-2 and Alec Gill (113) was 1-3, and both wrestlers earned sixth place points for Marshalltown.
Next up for the Bobcats is a home dual against Urbandale at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Roundhouse.
EM/GMG crowns two, team 3rd at Belle Plaine
BELLE PLAINE - Six of East Marshall/GMG's 13 wrestlers placed third or better as the Mustangs came in third at the Plainsmen Invitational on Saturday.
Class 2A fifth-ranked Union won with 241 points, followed by Mount Vernon (240.5) and East Marshall (159) in the seven-team event.
The Mustangs crowned two champions on the day with Zach Underhill winning at 120 pounds and seventh-ranked Jay Reisetter prevailing at 182. Underhill had three pins in a total time of 7 minutes, 33 seconds in his title run, while Reisetter pinned two opponents in a combined 5:56.
Steven Proffitt (113) and Nate Judge (285) also reached their respective finals in earning runner-up spots. Judge, ranked sixth, was defeated 4-2 in overtime by Union's second-ranked Josh Clark.
Devon Yilek compiled a 3-1 day on his way to third at 160, winning twice by fall. Talon Roseland was 2-1 in finishing third at 132, scoring one pin along the way.
Fourth-place finishes went to Nick Long (138) and Rean Webb (145) for the Mustangs, who host Don Bosco, Hudson and Jesup on Thursday night in Le Grand.
Storm settle for one win in Gilbert
GILBERT - Luke Asche and Tyler Lutes both went undefeated as the South Hardin-BCLUW wrestling team posted a 1-3 mark at the Gilbert Duals Saturday.
Asche won a pair of decisions at 138 and two by fall at 145. Lutes (160) won two by fall, one by technical fall and one by forfeit.
Sawyer Anderson (126), Mac Simpson (132), Carter King (152) all finished with 3-1 records on the day.
The Storm (3-5) posted a 44-36 victory over Gilbert, but dropped their other three duals against Pleasant Valley (42-39), Class 3A No. 1-ranked Southeast Polk (50-21) and Iowa Falls-Alden (48-34).
The Storm host AGWSR and South Tama on Thursday.
